Promoting fishing to a new generation
Fishing is a major industry in Wisconsin, with more than 30,000 jobs dependant on its vitality. Fishing also pours an estimated $2.75 billion into the state's economy. Additionally, the DNR uses no public tax dollars to support its fisheries program. It is almost entirely funded by license purchases and grants from the federal government. Thus, it is user-based. The more people that fish, the more money gets pumped into fishing.
While Wisconsin has one of the highest percentages of people that fish, the percentage of young people that fish is lower than it has been in past generations. The Department of Natural Resources is attempting to attract young anglers to the state's waters through several initiatives like the "Take Me Fishing" advertising campaign and the Aquatic Resources Education program that trains volunteers in schools to promote fishing and environmental protection of Wisconsin's fisheries. The Free Fishing Weekend is coming up the first weekend in June as well.
What other types of programs or initiatives would get more youths involved in the sport?
